Finished the manga adaption of The Last of the Mohicans by Shigeru - TopicsExpress

Finished the manga adaption of The Last of the Mohicans by Shigeru Sugiura. I honestly dont know what it was. I would have been lost without the essays about the historical context. It was not really a faithful adaptation per se. It was like if you decided not to read The Wizard of Oz and based a comic adaptation on the movie. But then you decided to do the adaption on an obscure silent version from 1913 that 10 people have seen. And you drop 10 tabs of acid before drawing anything. And you are adapting it to a culture of Amazonian Indians who have never had contact with the outside world. Half the art was standard fare cartoony manga but a bit amateurish, maybe Im spoiled by Tezuka but a lot of the panels were barely Deviantart quality. The other half was blatantly traced from American Western comics from the 1950s and 1960s. So nothing fit together aesthetically. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt and say it was some kind of a binary pairing and he was doing some kind of Deconstruction approach but it seemed totally arbitrary what was drawn in what style. Jarring would be a good word. It reminded me of some of the movies you watch when you look at important films of the past. A lot of them were products of the time and worth looking at as historical artifacts but they are not necessarily something completely accessible to someone from this time period and culture (looking at you French New Wave).
