Finished the novel Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee. This novel won the Man Booker Prize in 1999. Ive only read one other Booker-prize winner, The Ghost Road by Pat Barker, but Ive read some others that were advertised as runners-up. The Booker Prize is super prestigious among serious authors, and as a reader it guarantees you a chewy read. As a practical matter, a long long novel like Infinite Jest would not win the Booker Prize, because the awards committee would not have patience for it. Cramming a lot of ideas and a distinctive prose style in a book under 300 pages was once the formula for winning a Booker. Recently, longer books have made the cut. One of the books I want to read soon is the Booker winner by Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall, which is 600+ pages. Wait! Ive wasted a whole paragraph clearing my throat, not writing about the book I just read . . . .
