::: Fiqh of Purification (1): Types of water and their rulings ::: The types of water permissible for purification are seven: (1) rain water, (2) ocean water, (3) river water, (4) water from well [and other underground sources], (5) water from melted snow, (6) hail water upon melting and (7) spring water. In Hanafi fiqh, Water is divided into five different types: 1 – Water that is pure in itself, and purifying for other things. There is no dislike in using this type of water. Example: plain water. 2 – Water that is pure in itself and purifying for other things, although it is disliked to use because it is a small quantity of water that a cat or a similar animal has drunk from. 3 – Water that is pure in itself, though is not purifying for other things. This is water that one has used to remove his minor [or major] impurity. Water becomes used right after it separates from the body. 4 – Water that is filthy. This is a small quantity of *still water* into which an impurity has fallen. The water is deemed impure even if no trace of filth appears therein. A small quantity of water is considered as less than ten by ten arm lengths. [1 arm’s length = approximately 48 cm] If however, an impurity falls in running water and the signs of filth appear in it, then it is deemed impure. The signs (or traces) of filth are taste, color or smell. 5 – Water which is doubtful with respect to its purifying other things, and with respect to its actual purity. This is water which a donkey or mule, for example, has drunk from. The rulings for this type of water will be discussed in a later post, inshaAllah. N.B. This is a quick draft. Please let me know if you have difficulty in understanding any of the points discussed. The final draft will be uploaded at beginnerinislam.wordpress/
