Fire Island, New York was a theater for Modernist architectural innovation in the 1960s and ’70s every much as groundbreaking as Palm Springs was decades before. For a variety of reasons, though, Fire Island’s architecture has not been the focus of nearly as much attention. Horace Gifford is the architect responsible for giving the houses of Fire Island their signature look: modernist masterpieces of glass and sun-bleached cedar. Giffords houses are built from local wood and other materials that could be carried to construction site by hand. The intent was for his houses to look undated in 20 years...We think that brief is fulfilled.
