Fire Science Friday: Using Potato Chips to Keep You Out of Prison The problem with teaching a fire investigator class is that you have to teach them fire investigators limitations, including teaching the tips and tricks arsonists use that make it impossible to distinguish arson from an accidental fire. An even bigger problem is when I post these tips and tricks to facebook and show people how easy insurance fraud can be. So listen up. The number one cause of fires in unattended cars is faulty wiring. Lets use that to our advantage. This is going to sound super-specific, but for a lot of reasons, take your car that is insured for more than it is worth, and put a bag of potato chips behind the dash where all that nifty wiring is. Set the potato chips on fire. Now walk away. Put your sunglasses on. You look like a badass. The oils on the chips burn the same way that many carbon based fuels do, including the plastic wire sheathing, so it wont leave any suspicious traces of accelerants, but it will burn hot enough to make sure the car is beyond repair and also to destroy any evidence that the chips were ever there. It will look to every fire investigator in the world like there was some faulty wiring in the now-char-grilled wiring harness and it will be impossible for them to know the truth. Also, like, dont use this information Im giving you to commit felonies, n stuff.
