Fire Update Warm Springs Oregon* * * * * * * * * * * * * Been a spell folks.... because its all a little more quiet.... of our major incidents we have here is the breakdown.... Shaniko Butte 52,500 acres 98% contained patrol status NeNe Creek 325 acres 97% contained patrol status Logging Unit 6,681 acres 100% contained still staffed Bear Butte II 4020 acres 75% contained still staffed Severity with 4 engines and 7 overhead still staffed Fire Camp 250 firefighters & support staff Winding down yet still prepared to respond to anticipated sleeper fires from the past lightning..... it will get warmer here in the next few days and we will be ready. A long season with our staff having spent long hard hours on the fires. 3 camp crews are committed with one returning from the Carlton Complex up in Winthrop WA, the IHC crew is on the Upper Falls incident in Winthrop WA, part of the Carlton Complex also. We have the Crow Agency Helicopter and the Ute Mountain Helicopter both National Exclusive Use Ships, an Engine from Southern Pueblo that has Guy Herkshan as an ENGB... 2 BIA engines from Ft Apache Agency and a Pima Agency Engine..... a Type 2IA crew from Ft Hall Idaho with miscellaneous overhead also from Ft Hall..... The Bear Butte II fire is experiencing major mop up and holding actions, the fire took off for an additional 300 or so acres last week before the storm... its stabilized for now yet we will watch that one until the snow flies.... Outlooks point to a gradual slowing of fire season through August and September with return to normal seasonal trends in late September.... the projection is for fire season to end in early October for the Pacific Northwest still over a month away.... The fire potential index will most likely stay at the current level and drop slowly from high to moderate..... large fire activity will be minimal unless a return to high temperatures and winds dry out the fuels enough... and a high Haines is experienced... East winds can trigger a large fire potential also... not done yet so we are just preparing for any eventuality... Otherwise... its nice to have a little calm now after such a busy and hectic month of fire activity... Have a great day folks because I am..... and because Dan Martinez would say so!!!
