First Ill answer: Yes, this country is crazy and a danger to itself and others. We cant seem to do anything in moderation, and we have long passed that point of being that rich nation that upholds individual freedoms, to now I feel I live in a nation of narcissists who feel they are above approach. Thus the good things about this country are fast-fading into an indulgent wallow. In the land of the free do we really celebrate independent thinkers? Americans really adhere to their groups when you think about it, and shun anything that isnt mainstream. Ironic then, that any mention of socialism ( social organization, large or small, based on group needs) is absolutely unacceptable! For sure we have done a poor job of educating (as in, world knowledge) about what other countries do and why, what works, what doesnt. My one wish for this country is that we could admit our mistakes when we make one. Humility is a feature we like to see in individuals, but Americans dont like to see in their nation-- its seen as a sign of weakness. (And I actually want to say Republicans see it as weakness, because Democrats are much better at being critical of themselves and their country than Republicans will ever be). As far as Europe, we all want to go there for a reason, its nice. I like the quote in the article about when a peoples basic needs are met....(all the things most Americans struggle so hard to attain and arent getting there)...then they are free to do as they like... Which seems to me, to be actual freedom. Well, there are so many things to comment on in this article. I have to say in defense of our country, Europe has been the recipient of tremendous amounts of aid and enormous military protections courtesy of the U.S.A. since WW II and that is part of the reason we have a vision of Europeans languishing in their streetside cafes for over half a century now sipping wine and espressos over their 2 hour lunch while contemplating what they will do on their 6 week vacation break. But I just think we can have that too!
