Fishing update: January 11, 2015 BATTLE OF THE WHITING The Tuross Head Fishing Club’s goblet fish was Whiting this month, but the weather gods made it a challenge for our fisho’s. Saturday morning’s sunshine enticed a lot of boats out onto the lake and the sunscreen was being lathered on while bait collected and lines thrown in. It wasn’t long before the first few whiting were carefully placed in the keeper nets. The biggest Whiting caught, so the story goes is still swimming out there as the unlucky angler dropped it overboard while taking it out of the live well of his boat to weigh it in at the Tuross Boatshed. Unfortunately for Mark Brown it cost him the goblet, but he still managed to pick up the prize for Turkey of the month. The heavens opened later in the day and the heavy rain brought most of the boats in early, at least it helped wash off the sunscreen and cool down the sunburn on those who forgot to take it. The rain continued into Sunday keeping most boats on dry land. Over all 32 fish were weighed in at the BBQ held at the Tuross Head Country Club on Sunday afternoon. The biggest Whiting taking out the cherished goblet was caught by Dave Fisher and weighed .395 kg, well done Dave. The biggest lake and estuary fish caught by a lady was a very nice Flathead 72cm weighing 2.37kg by Tammy Shotton and the biggest for the men was a cracking Flathead 89 cm long weighing in at 4.80kg by Mark Brown. Mark and Tammy both released the big girls as they are the breeders that will produce many more fish for the future. Well done both of you! Rock and Beach award was won by Paul Brown with a nice Drummer weighing .870 kg Next month’s Goblet will be the highly cherished Blackfish and if last year’s weigh in is anything to go by it will be a battle of the boats to get to the best spots and land that monster fish for the 4pm Sunday weigh in. Good luck and see you on the water.
