Fit & Bendy Tip of the Day: Preparing for pretzel (head sit or chest stand)... If you want to start working on pretzel, the most important thing is to make sure that your neck and upper back are strong and aligned. If you start training this position with an existing injury or imbalance in that area it can lead to injury and it will make it harder to find the position (people often lean slightly to one side or the other which makes balance challenging). To feel the position, drop the head back without letting the chest lift so that the front of the throat stretches open. Slide the shoulder blades down the back, engaging the lats and opening up the chest. You should be able to make your throat flat and even from your chin to your sternum, shoulder to shoulder. Stretching out the neck and upper back should be done slowly and in conjunction with strengthening exercises as all of your body weight will be on your chin and shoulders for certain positions.
