Fitness Instructor Training Opportunity in Stornoway! Here is some information about a training opportunity in Stornoway. There are three part-funded places still available. The practical element of the course will be delivered between the 14th – 18th October at The Sports Centre in Stornoway. The cost will be £200 per candidate – normally this course would cost approximately £700! Over recent years many areas across the Outer Hebrides have developed community halls, some with excellent fitness equipment. NHS Western Isles and CnES are working together to try and increase physical activity opportunities within local communities and maximise the use of these facilities. A Level 2 Fitness Instructor course is planned for October 2013 targeted at individuals who would be interested in delivering fitness classes and activities in their own communities. It is funded by the DALLAS/’Living It Up’ project, which has as one of its aims the desire to promote wellbeing and independence. Sara Bartram. Public Health Practitioner at NHS Western Isles said “This is a fantastic opportunity to develop skills within our communities which will directly increase physical activity levels. There are already good examples of this in Uig and on the West side of Lewis and this is a chance to develop this to many other locations. We all know how expensive and time consuming travel is at present and this will allow people to hopefully be able to take a range of physical activity close to home”. Tony Wade, Sports Facilities Services Manager with the Comhairle added “We are delighted that this opportunity will increase the number of qualified Fitness Instructors across the islands and we look forward to offering mentoring and support over the coming months”. The course will require some distance learning and five days full time training at Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais in Stornoway in October.
