Five women are coming to the ROC, and they’re ready to rock. Leave the tykes at home for this Geva Theatre Center show. It is strictly for those 16 and older, due to some pretty colorful language that the little ones just shouldn’t hear. MoM: A Rock Concert Musical, named outstanding musical when it debuted during the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival, tells the tale of five suburban housewives who decide to form a band — and end up becoming an international phenomenon. Played out over the course of eight years in their new lives as rock musicians, the ladies deal with the fun and fatigue of fame, fractured relationships with loved ones back home and new outlooks on the merits of granny pants versus more alluring undergarments. “This is a show about balancing what you want to do in life with what you have to do,” says Richard Caliban, 60, the show’s creator and director, who formerly ran a 10,000-square-foot performance space in Tribeca, featuring the likes of Blue Man Group before they were famous. “It’s about the struggles associated with fulfilling your dreams while still making practical choices.” Donna Jean Fogel, who grew up in the San Francisco area and is the granddaughter of a Canadian Orthodox rabbi, plays the part of Karen, a soccer-coaching mom who borrows her son’s drum set for fun and ends up becoming the rhythm section in MoM. “The show is a rock concert with a story,” says Fogel, a Carnegie Mellon University theater graduate whose off-Broadway credits include Stop Kiss, Scenes from an Execution and Dogg’s Hamlet/Cahoot’s MacBeth. “It’s very much an ensemble piece and a lot of fun for the band and the audience alike.” Fellow performers include Lisa Bianco, a singer/songwriter/guitarist who has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Antigone Rising and Rick Springfield; Stefanie Seskin, a classically trained flutist and founder of the critically acclaimed band blue number nine; Bekka Lindström, a guitarist who recently appeared in The Lightning Field in New York City and London; and Laura Maclean, a Gibson-endorsed artist whose band has opened for Tom Rush and Aimee Mann. The show has an original score with songs such as “Why Can’t He Take Care of the Kids for a Change?” and “Moms in Thongs.” And a song that sums up the show, “Don’t Hold Back,” whose lyrics include: “Be the first to arrive, be the last to leave.
