Five years ago today, the Supreme Court’s Citizen United - TopicsExpress

Five years ago today, the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision started the flurry of cash from high-dollar donors right into our elections, masquerading as “free speech.” What has been the difference? According to the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law, Super PACs have spent $1 billion on the last three election cycles since the Citizens United decision and more than $600 million of that were from the same 195 individuals and their spouses. I think our elections should be about who has the best ideas to move our country forward, not who can raise the most money. That’s why I support the Democracy for All Amendment to the Constitution, to overturn Citizens United and allow Congress to reintroduce meaningful campaign finance reform. I am also an original cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act and Government by the People Act. It’s time for Congress to overturn Citizens United and give politics back to the people.
