“Five years later.” With those words, the Legion of Super-Heroes cut its ties with the optimistic, utopian vision of the 30th Century that had characterized the series from its 1950s origins to the recently-concluded run by scripter Paul Levitz. Plotted and penciled by Keith Giffen (with dialogue by Tom & Mary Bierbaum and editing by Mark Waid), the series was adventurous and innovative in its storytelling—complete with Watchmen-style supplementary material—and inspired a passionate following even as some longtime fans shuddered over the fact the Legion had become grim and gritty. The first issue of the NEW Legion of Super-Heroes went on sale 25 years ago today on September12, 1989.
