Flash: Abuja Court Discharges Women’s Handbag Snatcher Over Claims Of Insanity SEPTEMBER 14, 2013 An Abuja Magistrates’ Court on Friday discharged a 24-year-old man, Sunday Isa, accused of snatching women’s handbags. The Magistrate, Malam Zubairu Mohammed, discharged the accused on suspicion of insanity. Zubairu also ordered the police to ascertain the accused’s mental health. The magistrate’s order followed the strange behaviour of the accused in the dock. While in the dock, the accused began to sing incoherently and danced wildly like a lunatic. “Prosecutor, it is very obvious that the accused is insane, so take him back to the IPO to ascertain his mental status. “This case is, hereby, dismissed because we cannot go on with the trial of an accused whose mental health is suspect,’’ the magistrate ruled. The police prosecutor, Cpl. Simon Emmanuel, however, told the court that the accused was ‘’merely pretending to be mad’’. Isa, who is of no fixed address, was earlier charged with the attempt to snatch a woman’s handbag. The prosecutor said that CSP. Mohammed Umoru and Cpl. James Abam arrested the accused while attempting to snatch a woman’s handbag at the Jabi Airport Junction Bridge. Emmanuel said that that the two police officers had on Sept. 9 brought the accused to the Life Camp Division of the FCT Police Command for further investigation. The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 95 of the Penal Code, urging the court to try and convict the accused. NAN
