Flashback: 1982 Fort Knox, Kentucky: I don’t know how the military is now, but in the days I was in the military, there were many crazy antics that military personnel were involved in. It would not be uncommon to see a soldier riding on the roof of a corvette, TransAM or Camaro by his fingers as 4 soldiers are inside the car, driving down the road like maniacs. Soldiers worked hard and partied hard. One group of soldiers called themselves the ‘Maddogs’, before hitting the streets, they would all chug down one bottle of MD 20/20. The Maddogs once went to a strip joint and saw a row of motorcycles (belonging to the Outlaws) parked out on the street, one of the soldiers pushed one bike over and like a domino effect, all of the bikes came tumbling down. The Maddogs were seen running down the street with the Outlaws chasing after them. Some of the soldiers had CB radios and PA systems, so if they saw a pretty woman walking down the street, they would talk through their PA system and ask the girl if they wanted a ride. An initiation that some soldiers would do on new soldiers is telling them, that since they are a new soldier in the unit, that other soldiers are going to take this soldier out to dinner. The newbie soldier got to pick the place that they would have dinner. When they finished dinner, the soldiers one at a time, would excuse themselves to use the restroom. Finally, the only one at the table is the newbie soldier who now has to fork out money for everyone’s dinner, including his own. The greatest place for an after hour meal in Kentucky is White Castle. After many of the soldiers spent their money at the night club or on women, perhaps one soldier would have enough money for some White Castle mini-burgers. The other soldiers being very hungry, would chase the soldier with the White Castles around the parking lot, until his bag ripped and flying mini burgers were hitting the parking lot pavement, with every soldier scooping up the mini burger to consume. Flashback 1974. Fort Ord , California. During Survival Training – POW Training, we were in a mock POW camp. To eat, the guards would toss the chicken and rice on the muddy ground. The POW prisoners would have to get on all fours and eat from the ground. Otherwise you will go hungry. Let me tell you, I did not go hungry, I ate the chicken and rice that was thrown in the muddy ground, while other soldiers refused to eat it. I did not hesitate to eat my chicken and rice and the soldiers who did not eat their chicken and rice, flunked the course. Part of the training was being placed in a coffin and buried alive, many soldiers went crazy and started screaming like crazy. When I went into the coffin, I went straight to sleep. I passed this course with flying colors. Yes, in survival training I ate bugs! If the Apocalypse comes, I am pretty sure I am going to survive….hooyah!
