Hello Florida Animal Advocates, You have not heard from us lately about the greyhound issue because Governor Scott is wheeling and dealing (no pun intended) with the Seminoles---so gambling legislation was put on hold. BUT the Senate Gaming Committee has now decided to focus its attention on the future of greyhound racing. There will be greyhound discussion by the Senate Gaming Committee on Tuesday, April 8th at 1pm. Please see Tampa Bay Times article tampabay/blogs/the-buzz-florida-politics/senate-drops-gambling-bill-revives-bill-to-end-greyhound-racing/2173399 . If you have not sent an e-mail to the Senate Gaming Committee, please do so. If you already have--it would help if you sent another! It is very important for us to speak up RIGHT NOW for the greyhounds!! The state legislation session ends in just three weeks so all of this will move very quickly. Please contact the Senate Gaming Committee members today and let them know that you would like to see greyhound racing prohibited in Florida---let them know injury reporting and decoupling are steps in the right direction. Tracks are being forced to run unnecessary races in order to keep their card rooms. Unnecessary races have resulted in carelessness---74 deaths of greyhounds in the last 7 months of 2013. Greyhounds are bred by the thousands with the sole purpose to win races. The majority of greyhounds do not live past 2 or 3 years old---they are euthanized because they are no longer profitable. During their short lifetime they are treated inhumanely. For these reasons I would like legislators to consider decoupling greyhound racing and eventually phasing out and prohibiting greyhound racing in Florida within the next few years.
