Focus on less-known tourist spots Siliguri, Sept. 21: The apex body of tourism stakeholders in north Bengal has said it will focus on integrating all tourism stakeholders in north Bengal and try to promote destinations in Malda, the two Dinajpurs and Cooch Behar. The decision was taken at the Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators’ Association’s biennial general meeting yesterday. Partha Pratim Guha, the new general secretary of the association, said: “We want to integrate tourism stakeholders across the region and develop our organisation into a common platform to campaign for new destinations. We intend to speak to stakeholders in Malda, the two Dinajpurs and Cooch Behar, because in terms of tourist footfall these districts lag behind Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.” Guha said the common perception among tourists, particularly those visiting from outside Bengal, is that after Murshidabad — famous for Hazar Duari — the next potential destination is Darjeeling or the Dooars. Hardly a handful of people know about Gour in Malda or the Cooch Behar palace and visit these places. tt
