The music acts appearing on the show that night include I’M YOUR VINYL, CORNER BOY, SINEAD WHITE, EDISONS and BRIAN KENEALY; and there will be literature from BRIAN CONAGHAN and AIDEN O’REILLY, and an excerpt from the play – Project Pegasus – Cuddle The Moon. Dublin is alive and kickin’. Go out and see it! The Nighthawks People Nighthawks at the Cobalt Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 Cobalt Cafe 16 North Great Georges Street Dublin 1 Maeve Higgins Despite her youth, and her somewhat volatile relationship with Michael Fassbender, Maeve Higgins has pretty much achieved everything… and achieved it with disgusting ease and peerless grace. Maeve has toured the world with her stand-up comedy. Maeve has starred in many hit TV shows – Naked Camera and Fancy Vittles. Maeve has written a best-selling book – We Have a Good Time… Don’t We? –and writes a weekly column for Ireland’s ‘newspaper of record’. Maeve has also done lots of important radio stuff – and it wouldn’t surprise us if she’s President of Ireland by the time she’s 35. (Don’t think you can take up the post before that age.) Anyway, long story short, Maeve is a national treasure – and is undoubtedly one of the sharpest stand-ups in the land. Do not miss her at the Cobalt on Saturday, February 22nd. Here’s some footage of Maeve rockin’ the roof clean off some mega-huge-comedy-stadium-type-place in New Zealand. youtube/watch?v=iUwntYVxkWA Tandem Felix We’ve been big fans of Tandem Felix since we first saw them play live last summer, and it’s great to finally get them along to Nighthawks at the Cobalt. This Lucan band really are something special. When they launched their last single – ‘Ryan Hoguet / How Strange, The Weather’ – at the Button Factory in December there was a real buzz in the crowd – and 2014 could well be their break-through year. Check out their critically acclaimed debut EP – Popcorn – and make sure you catch them at the Cobalt on February 22nd. They won’t be playing small venues for long. Here are Tandem Felix with ‘How Strange, the Weather’ – youtube/watch?v=1SBismQmsuo. Shadows and Dust Shadows and Dust are a group of very talented musicians whose songs are a mix of folk and rock. They were a huge hit the last time that they played Nighthawks and it’s great to have them back. Since we’ve last seen them at the Cobalt, they’ve played a string of high profile gigs – including their own headline show on the main stage of Whelan’s and a support slot to James Vincent McMorrow; and they’ve also released a very fine debut EP – Each Year Forever. Here are Shadows and Dust playing ‘Cobblestones’ – youtube/watch?v=LY_3rs7i1uQ. Stephen Murray Stephen Murray is a very gifted poet who lives and writes on the west coast of Clare. He is the author of two excellent collections of poetry – House of Bees and On Corkscrew Hill – and is a former winner of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature Grand Slam. Stephen has also appeared as guest reader at many of the world’s most famous poetry venues – including the Green Mill in Chicago and The Bowery in New York. Not bad, eh? Stephen runs INSPIRELAND – an arts and literacy programme for schools across Ireland and Britain; and he recently launched Brave New Words – an online poetry magazine for schools. For more information visit inspireland.ie. Neil Hickey Neil Hickey is one of the quirkiest and most inventive stand-up comedians that we know; and his sets at the Cobalt over the last few years have been among some of the best that we’ve seen… so no pressure there, Neil. This man is a former winner of the prestigious Bulmers New Comedy Competition – and in 2013 his one man show Escape Artist was at a big hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Neil has also performed at all the top comedy venues throughout Ireland – and even got to support Bill Bailey at the Olympia Theatre! In the words of the Irish Independent – Neil Hickey is one of the most exciting newcomers to the Irish scene. He could well be at the vanguard of the next wave of Irish comics. We wholeheartedly concur with that. Sophie Coyle Sophie Coyle performs a unique brand of jazz fused folk – and her story-driven songs are steeped in haunting melodies which linger in the ear long after she has left the stage. Sophie has performed at Electric Picnic, the Flat Lakes Festival and Vantastival – and she has played with everyone from Jinx Lennon to Mundy – and from John Spillane to Luka Bloom. Sophie’s ballad ‘Delirium’ appears on the soundtrack of the horror film Spiderhole; and she is now living in Dundalk and recording a new album for release in May 2014. This is Sophie’s first performance at Nighthawks – so please make her feel very welcome on the night. Danny O’Brien A lot of you may already know Danny – as he is the resident host of the Comedy Crunch at the Stag’s Head in Dublin – one of Ireland’s busiest and best comedy clubs. Go and check it out! Danny is a talented stand-up comedian who has been performing regularly at the top comedy clubs in Ireland and the UK for the last couple of years. His first solo show – All My Friends – received excellent reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – and he is also a former winner of Galway’s coveted Tedfest Comedy Award. If you want to find out the shocking and shameful truth about the wild women of Wicklow and beyond… then you’ve come to the right place. Danny’s got the scoop (and other implements) and he’s not afraid to use it! Tickets are now on sale at entertainment.ie/show-/Cobalt-Cafe-and-Gallery/Nighthawks-at-the-Cobalt/event-2706328.htm. Price €14 – plus fee. Capacity is limited, so please buy your tickets early in order to avoid disappointment. Doors open at 7.45pm on the night. Strictly no admission after 8.10pm. Show ends at 11.15pm. Bar available.
