Folks, for lots of us the midterm elections were a slap in the face with a dead fish. Lots of us fell in love with early polls and anticipatory poll numbers. Lots of us now are damning our fellow citizens with abandon. Ive been through too many electoral disappointments to let this one sour me on democracy, on this country, or on my fellow citizens. Im sticking with Harry Trumans wisdom, which reminds us that sooner or later the American people do see through political fraudmeisters (my word, not his) -- and that sometimes its later rather than sooner. Now the GOP has to govern; they cant take shelter behind the politics of no after January. And, however astonishing their electoral victories might be in the cold light of day, they also dont have veto-proof majorities in EITHER house of Congress. That also means that they dont have the ability to amend the Constitution at will either, because they dont have the needed supermajorities in either house of Congress or in the needed three-fourths of the states. Then again, neither do we. So lets set aside our fantasies of amending the Constitution to get rid of this or that odious Court decision, and lets also set aside our fantasies of politics as LORD OF THE RINGS in which the other side are orcs, demons, of Sauron, fit only for destruction. Lets remember Lincolns sage counsel about how we are all citizens of this country and how we have to live together, work together, and -- yes -- govern together. Lets be strong and of good courage, and gear up for 2016, while keeping our calm between now and then.
