Folks its been just over 6 months since I was elected councillor. Thank you to everyone who has helped us along way. We are making great gains, and are fighting everyday to change the way politics is done here. Below is a list of some of the things i have done since May. It’s a long list but I think it’s important to let people know the work we are doing on the ground for people in W Belfast and beyond. #doingpoliticsdifferently Supporting W.Belfast; -Campaigned with residents in Rock Streets to successfully get gates installed in alleyways -Reported unsafe and mucky paths in Falls Park to Belfast City Council on behalf of a resident concerned about the health and safety of walkers -Arranged for Housing Executive to come out to repair communal lighting in flats on Shaws Rd -Held round table meeting with residents and HE to address concerns in the Falls area -Helped organise the campaign to Save St.James post office -Recorded and reported problems with alleys and gates in St.James area to relevant bodies -Helped resident in Shaws Rd area secure a kitchen replacement scheme. -Got Belfast City Council to clear rubbish from Clondara Street and Slieveban Drive -Arranged for Belfast City Council cleansing team to come out and remove graffiti from alleyway in Whiterock area -Spoke with Belfast City Council about getting grit bins for a street in Beechmount area. They promised to send out assessors to see if this could be accommodated -Dealt with over 30 individual cases for housing executive tenants who were seeking a move. Called Housing Executive on their behalf, and relayed concerns to the department about the lack of social housing in the area. -Contacted water service on behalf of a resident in Glencolin who had ongoing problems with overflowing drains. Water service gave commitment to send out inspectors and emergency dispatch team the next time the drain overflowed -Reported a draught problem to the Housing Executive for resident in Ballymurphy area. -Arranged for the repair of a broken light in Andytown gardens -Contacted the HE on behalf of a resident of Westrock area seeking to get their old fire replaced -Spoke to the HE and pressed them to find permanent accommodation for a tenant who had been made homeless and had no choice but to stay at a hostel -Arranged for Roads Service to have lights at the top of Finaghy fixed. -Put pressure on the Housing Executive to replace an outdated boiler for tenant in Whiterock area -Reported broken communal lighting in Westrock Mews to Fold Housing who gave commitment to send out a technician to repair it -Contacted council about getting an alleyway cleaned in Whiterock -Contacted the Electoral Office on behalf of several residents who needed electoral registration forms -Approached HE on behalf of a resident who had problems with cold, draught and a broken back door in Ballymurphy area. -Reported problem with bins in Upton Cottages to Belfast city council on behalf of elderly residents who requested bins be collected from a spot that was easier for them to access -Highlighted the issue of dog fouling dog in Norfolk Parade and ensured Belfast City Council dog wardens would inspect it as part of their regular route -Secured dog wardens to patrol Street in Glen Road area after a resident complained about fouling -Reported rubbish behind Gransha shops to Belfast city council -Complained to DRD about blocked drains and broken lights in Beechmount area -Lobbied roads service about getting yellow lines extended at the entrance of a street in Glen Road area. This was on behalf of several residents who raised concerns about congestion bottleneck caused by parked cars at the entrance to their street. Road service to send inspector out. -Arranged for green rubbish bags to be delivered to a resident in Glen Road area -Contacted estate agents on behalf of a Falls resident who needed out of their tenancy agreement urgently. They agreed to relay request to landlord and noted that a local councillor had raised concerns for their case -Contacted HE about repairs needed in Beechmount area. -Arranged for Road Service to come out and inspect drains in Whiterock Area after residents complained of foul smells coming from gullies and they are now carrying out a investigation of the mains. -Examined shed subsiding at house in Andersonstown that was caused by DOE road works and working with resident to find resolution. -Ensured Housing Executive Estate Wardens would come out to assess dirt on walls in Whiterock area after residents complained about upkeep -Approached water service about a blocked drain in Brittons Drive and they agreed to send out team to inspect mains to see if this was the cause of blockage -Contacted Housing Executive on behalf of a Whiterock resident who had problems with blocked gutters. Housing Executive agreed to send out maintenance inspector and gutters were cleaned -Contacted the Roads Service on behalf of a resident in Whiterock area who was concerned about traffic entering cul de sac too quickly. Roads service agreed to send someone out to see if it were possible to erect a road sign informing motorists this was a cul de sac. -Relayed problems of subsiding ground in back entry in Whiterock area to water service. They sent out team to blast jet the pipes to clear any blockages. They also agreed to investigate the mains to see if a burst pipe was causing the problem -Helped a number of residents, in Beechmount, Iveagh, Ballymurphy and St james, in private and HE accommodation, who had damp issue and liaised with relevant bodies to help get the situation sorted. -Arranged for street sweepers to clean up Rodney drive -Reported to Roads Service blocked drains in St.James -Organised door to door survey regarding the improvement of a local amenity in Andersonstown area. -Put pressure on Housing Executive to begin work on a facility to help a resident from Falls Road area with a disability access issue. -Spoke with private building contractor and arranged for them to move trucks that were interfering with residents right of passage in Stockmans Lane. -Arranged for council to clear fridges dumped out the back of shops at the top of Stockmans Park -Raised concerns to Council about closure of Willow Bank Park and pushed for it to be reopened -Reported lights out in Andersonstown, Riverdale, St. James, Beechmount and Ballymurphy, areas to DRD -Contacted NI water about repairs needed to a wall damaged by construction work in Fruithill -Reported a bin not being collected in Fruithill to Belfast City Council -Complained to private contractor about Broken lights in Fruithill. -Reported graffiti in Ben Raw to Belfast City Council cleansing team -Secured extra bin for park in North Link, Andersonstown -Contacted rivers agency to raise concern about the issue of flooding in Riverdale -Arranged for Housing Executive inspector to come out and assess a tenant’s faulty door in Shaws Road area -Wrote letters of concern to housing executive regarding overcrowding in Iveagh area -Met with parents concerned about lack of special needs provision for child. -Wrote to HE about getting access to special circumstances grant for resident of Andersonstown -Reported barbed wire and overgrown trees in Finaghy power station to NIE -Helped individual in Andersonstown with application for carer allowance -Secured traffic surveying for Donegal road to ease traffic congestion and speeding -Arranged for roads service to tidy up the grass at the roundabout at the top of Kennedy Way -Contacted Council and ensured Dog warden would patrol St. James area to address dog fouling -Contacted Belfast City Council to secure a second bin for resident in Meadow Hill Supporting Workers Rights; -Spoke at and attended the AGM of Nipsa Child support agency branch. -Attended Unite branch meeting of council workers. -Met with Trade Union group on Belfast City council about concerns over leisure privatisation and other issues. -Met with Greenwhich Leisure Limited and expressed concerns over plans for the future of Belfast leisure facilities. -Got motion of support for council workers strike passed in Belfast City Council on October 15. -Held meeting with, and helped organise protest of ISS cleaners against pay cut and job losses. -Met with and supported staff member from Shankill area who was threatened with eviction from Council property. -Secured wage increase for education worker from BELB who had pay unfairly docked. -Attended picket lines of local council workers strike on Thursday 10th July -Attended PCS strike picket lines on 15 Oct -Attended Unite and GMB picket lines on 24 Nov and 13 Oct, addressing health workers outside Stormont and Bangor Hospital -Attended and spoke at launch of Union taxis: a worker’s co-operative based on Springfield Road -Organised People Before Profit contingent for the Trade Union Pay Rise March on 18 Oct Anti Cuts Work; -Organised protest with Unison Royal Branch about ongoing crisis in the Royal A& E on 6 Sept -Petitioned hundreds of houses in West Belfast to end the crisis in the Royal A&E ward -Helped secure funding from Belfast City Council for an Art gallery that was under threat. -Met with PPR group about implementation of real jobs policy to get long term unemployed support and real jobs -Raised concerns in council about the impact of bus services closing. -Worked with local Irish Language groups to campaign against cuts in the sector -Attended and spoke in a meeting in Cathedral Quarter opposing cuts to the arts sector -Spoke out about the hypocrisy of luxuries for politicians such as the Lord Mayors car -Attended NIPSA protest against budget cuts at City hall on 3 Nov -Organised solidarity protest with water charges campaigners in Dublin, City Hall, December 10th -Attended meeting about the future of the Waterfront and expressed my opposition to privatization model Opposing Racism, Sectarianism and Bigotry; -Organised protest in conjunction with Unite against a sectarian attack on a young man at Springfield Road interface -Spoke at a demonstration against Racist Remarks by Pastor McConnell at City Hall -Helped organise an Anti Racism Network meeting of over 100 people in Holiday Inn in response to racist attacks in Belfast -Attended protest organised by WARN of over 100 people in response to racist attacks in Sliabh Dubh, West Belfast -Attended unveiling of traveller mural at International wall of peace on the anniversary of Kristallnacht -Chaired Foyle Pride public meeting with international LGBT activists -Organised People Before Profit contingent for Belfast Pride march on 2nd Aug -Attended launch of Belfast Migrant art work in Linen Hall Library -Attended demonstration at Stormont, 10th Dec, with Irish language activists to protest the bigotry of Gregory Campbell Supporting Palestine; -Proposed and helped organise a march of over 3000 people to US Consulate on 26th July -Helped organise a mass ‘Die-In’ outside BBC with over 1000 people, 1st August. -Was part of organising a convoy of 5 coaches from Belfast which went to the National Palestine Solidarity Demonstration in Dublin, 9th August -Played role in organising city centre march for Gaza with over 1000 people, 16th August -Spoke at Ardoyne Fleadh in support of the people of Palestine -Organised quiz fundraiser for the Al Wada Hospital in Gaza, raising £500 -Organised Boycott Day of Action in Cornmarket on 20th Sept, delivering 4000 leaflets encouraging shoppers not to buy Israeli goods -Attended Shabra and Shatila commemoration on Tuesday 16th September.
