Report from the last block captain meeting - thanks to Vicki -The following are the highlights of the meeting: Helicopter support for LAPD there are 18 helicopters in the fleet 35 pilots and 35+ tactical flight officers the licensed pilots and tactical flight officers receive 4 months of training the helicopters are available 24 hrs. a day and are always patroling/flying during free time (not involved in a pursuit) they concentrate on certain areas of the city, i.e. hot spots when they leave an area the incident is over unless SWAT is involved and then SWAT takes over they stressed…when you hear the helicopter overhead don’t go outside to see what is happening. You could become a victim. An example they gave: they were flying overhead and lost the suspect. A resident heard a flowerpot break in her backyard. Instead of going outside she called LAPD and they found the suspect hiding in her shed. “DONT GO OUTSIDE WHEN YOU HEAR THE HELICPOTER OVERHEAD!” JPL did a study that showed the use of helicopters reduced crime Other Information discussed: Don’t leave valuables in your car.
