Following a 1958 ground-breaking ceremony on farmland at 95th Street and Kostner Avenue in Oak Lawn, the hospital opened with fanfare as Christ Community Hospital on March 22, 1961 in a six-story building with fewer than 200 patient beds. Only four of those stories were completed when the hospital was dedicated. At that time, John F. Kennedy was president of the United States and the Ford Mustang was still three years away from production. In 1963, the fifth and sixth floors were opened, providing space for another 210 patient beds.
