Following on from the discussion about the tendency of scientists to use So at the beginning of a sentence, I was listening to The Forum (R4) this morning and one scientist began practically every utterance with a Well or a So or sometimes both. It seems to me that this is an attempt to magnify the importance of each statement by giving it an informal introductory space giving it the same function as the slight cough favoured by Miss Anne Elk. youtu.be/cAYDiPizDIs So...this is my theory and it is indeed completely mine.
