Following press release from the Texas AFL-CIO COPE (Committee on Political Education) endorses Democratic candidates running in statewide elections. As the WCDP receives information on candidate endorsements, we will post them here since some readers may find this kind of information useful when they are trying to decide how they are going to vote in the upcoming 2013 Primary Election. Jan. 26, 2014 News Release Contacts: Becky Moeller or Ed Sills, (512)477-6195 or (512)695-1148 Texas AFL-CIO COPE Endorses Davis, Van de Putte The political arm of the Texas AFL-CIO today unanimously endorsed Wendy Davis for Governor and Leticia Van de Putte for Lieutenant Governor, along with a slate of other statewide candidates. The endorsement vote came after a two-day convention that included candidate speeches and discussion of labors strategy for the 2014 election cycle. Both Davis and Van de Putte drew prolonged ovations from more than 350 delegates and guests meeting in downtown Austin. Political change is in the air in Texas, Texas AFL-CIO President Becky Moeller said. With todays endorsement of history-making candidates, the Texas AFL-CIO COPE will be fully geared up to work for a Texas that believes in fair opportunity for everyone, not just an elite few. The Texas AFL-CIO is a state labor federation consisting of approximately 240,000 affiliated union members. The Committee on Political Education (COPE) is the organizations Political Action Committee, making endorsements and donating funds in state races. The endorsements: Governor - Wendy Davis Lieutenant Governor - Leticia Van de Putte U.S. Senate - No endorsement Attorney General - Sam Houston Comptroller - Mike Collier Land Commissioner - John Cook Agriculture Commissioner - Hugh Fitzsimons Texas Railroad Commission, Place 2 - Steve Brown Texas Supreme Court, Place 1 - Bill Moody Texas Supreme Court, Place 6 - No position Texas Supreme Court, Place 7 - Gina Benavides Texas Supreme Court, Place 8 - No position Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 3 - No position Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 4 - No position Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 9-No position In non-statewide elections, delegates voted to accept the endorsements of the applicable local Central Labor Councils and incorporate them into the Texas AFL-CIO COPE endorsement list. If no Central Labor Council has jurisdiction in an electoral district, the Texas AFL-CIO COPE Committee will make endorsements. The delegates specifically took a No Endorsement position in Congressional Districts 20 and 23. All endorsements require at least a two-thirds vote.
