Following up on yesterdays post asking What were the three holes in front of Mayslake Hall used for? - they were coal chutes. A coal truck would deliver coal to the house, and the coal would be dropped through them, down to a large coal storage room in the basement. In the basement, the coal was then shoveled into the furnaces to heat the mansion. The steel doors on the outside of the mansion are now bolted shut, and in the basement the inside of the chutes have long ago been covered by plywood but do still exist. Mr. Peabody made his fortune mining and selling coal for both heat and to generate electricity. To quote/paraphrase Pete Spezia from yesterdays answers Asking Mr. Peabody if he used coal to heat his home, would be like asking Bill Gates if his house has WiFi Its always interesting to see unique parts of Mayslake Hall and understand what their original purpose was. Hope you enjoyed this little, unnoticed piece of the estate.
