Food for Thought: The Misunderstood Second Day of Genesis. And God said, Let there be a firmament ‘in the MIDST of the waters, and let it ‘divide’ the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were ‘UNDER the firmament from the waters which were ‘ABOVE the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. (The firmament is ‘in the midst’ of water, with waters above and below it.) 20 And God said Let the waters bring forth …and fowl that may fly above the earth in the ‘open’ firmament of heaven. (The lower atmosphere is called the ‘open’ firmament.) 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven.. (So, where are the sun moon and stars? In the firmament. Where are the ‘upper’ waters? That’s right, above the firmament!! We would call the firmament, space, or the universe. According to the Bible, there is water ABOVE the universe. And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: There is no record in Genesis of God ‘creating’ individual seas upon the earth because he just gathered the water into one place and caused the dry land to appear. It seems that prior to Noah’s flood, the habitable earth was one landmass with four great rivers, and surrounded by ocean). (So there were two ‘gatherings’ of water, one on earth and one above the universe). 1:10 …and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: Why did the KJV translators capitalize the word and use the plural? To make a point that there was one sea on earth, and one above the firmament. Maybe it’s time to take Psalms 148: 4 more literally. ‘Praise Him ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be ABOVE the heavens.’ John 8: 23. ‘And he said unto them, ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world (cosmos); I am not of this world’ (cosmos). Whilst we sort of understand what Jesus is saying, the deeper meaning lies in the fact that he is from above the separating waters which are above the firmament, and everything below is in fact this world or cosmos. Exodus 24: 9-10. ‘Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a PAVED work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.’ The word paved is Strongs 3840, from laban; properly, whiteness, i.e. (by implication) transparency:—paved. Ezekiel 1: 22. ‘And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible CRYSTAL, stretched forth over their heads above.’ Crystal:. Hebrew 7140 from ‘qarach’; ice (as if bald, i.e. smooth); hence, hail; by resemblance, rock crystal:—crystal, frost. The Sea above the firmament is symbolized in Solomon’s temple as the brazen sea, and can be traced through the OT, and is described in terms of being ice-like and glassy. Revelation 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. Glass from ualoV—hualos; glassy, i.e. transparent:—of glass. Crystal from a derivative of kruos (frost); ice, i.e. (by analogy) rock ‘crystal’:—crystal. Job 38:30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is FROZEN. Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more SEA. The Sea that God placed above the firmament on the second day, was NOT there in the original creation, and will NOT be in the future new heaven and earth. It is for THIS world, kosmos, age ONLY. Why? To separate the Holy from the profane. Adam’s sin brought death into THIS world, but the creation had already been subjected to death by the sin of the previous world. In scientific terms it’s known as the ‘Law of Entropy’. Everything is in decay.
