Food waste is now banned from garbage cans in Vancouver. Food scraps will go into an organic waste container to be composted. Fines and penalties for not adhering to the new law are congruent with improper disposal of hazardous materials. When food scraps and organic waste are buried under layers of garbage, it can’t decompose properly. Space is also limited in the landfills and more than 30 per cent of what we send there is compostable organics.
