Football - Premier League Paper Round: Vermaelen considers Arsenal exit Thomas Vermaelen is set to consider his future at Arsenal; Robert Lewandowski is the only threat to Englands progress to Brazil; and Lazio want Christian Benteke - here are the stories making headlines in todays newspapers. Vermaelen weighs up Arsenal future: Thomas Vermaelen has admitted for the first time that he would consider leaving Arsenal in January, reports The Times. The Belgian has lost his place in Arsene Wengers first XI and will look at his options in the New Year if his situation has not improved by then. Paper Rounds view: As with many other players at the moment, Vermaelen is thinking of his place in a World Cup squad. He may be captain of his country, but odds on he wont go to Brazil if hes done nothing but warm a bench at club level all season. Its imperative for him to get playing time, and if Wenger isnt prepared to give him that, he has to go. That man is Robert Lewandowski, the striker who the paper says England must stop if they are to reach the World Cup finals in Brazil after tonights must-win clash at Wembley. Make no bones about it, he is Poland’s Plan A, B and C all rolled into one, the report claims. Other topics the scouting mission raised are filed under the sub-headings Hidden Dangers, Central Battle, Beware of Long Throws and Defensive Weakness. Paper Rounds view: Surely it didnt need the paper to send one of their employees behind enemy lines to draw the conclusion that the Borussia Dortmund striker is a handy bit of work? Nevertheless, theyre right - Lewandowski is likely to give Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka a tough test, and England must cut off his supply lines if they are to nullify his threat. Unfortunately for Roy Hodgson the report, under the heading Hidden Dangers, also identifies wide man Jakub Blaszczykowski as one of Polands dangermen. Which is somewhat confusing, because we thought they were a one-man team... Juventus are also reported to be keen on the Belgium international, with their summer signing Fernando Llorente unsettled in Turin. Villa, though, would demand around £30m if they agreed to let Benteke go. Paper Rounds view: Its a good job for Lazio and Juve that Benteke didnt put pen to paper on a new four-year deal worth around £2m every 12 months just a matter of weeks ago. What? The inks still drying? Contracts, eh? Entirely meaningless these days. The paper claims that the Magpies have agreed a £6 million fee agreed with the London club for Remy, on top of the £2m they are already paying for his loan spell. Newcastle are keen to move quickly in a bid to ward off other interested parties, as they look to bring in another striker as well once the transfer window re-opens. Paper Rounds view: Remy has done well to prove himself in the Premier League and may now have set his targets a little higher. As the paper points out, he has cleverly kept his options open over his next move, and five goals in his last three appearances may not necessarily prove of benefit to Newcastle in the long run if he has now attracted other, better offers. The forward, whose peripheral role for the Stamford Bridge club has set tongues wagging, opened up to a Belgian newspaper, with the Mail relaying quotes such as: I really dont worry. You make it more of a problem than I do, Mourinho is the boss, he chooses who plays. We do not talk about it really, and He tells me when I do something bad, but frankly I havent heard such negative comments. Paper Rounds view: Clearly the Belgium camp is where rumour-hungry hacks want to be this week. After Vermaelen and Benteke comes De Bruyne, although his comments arent exactly concerning for those wanting to see him stay. Thats not to say he wont leave in January though. This is a Premier League footballer were talking about...
