For 4 years I was the director of Marketing and PR for 2 Fortune 500 companies. Since then (in what little spare time I have) I teach social media to a few independent companies and the most time consuming aspect of that is educating clients on the importance of Social Media. Theres a topic however that most people are not aware of when it comes to marketing online and I want to make very clear to all of you now so you dont fall into this misconception. Companies hire people with a large social media following to market their products. However not everyone is what they seem to be online (shocker!) Buying followers! Thats right! 85% of the people online have paid for their followers. Most of those being models, actors and celebrities. The problem is that it dilutes the marketplace and devalues people with real followers which really pisses me off since that an ugly egotistical form of deception. Heres how you can spot someone who paid for their fans : Their number of followers dont match the number of likes on their photos. Now since you can also pay for photo likes then you can research even further and see if the comment numbers match the likes. Example : someone with a 10k following yet only has 100 likes on their photos obviously paid for the follows. Someone who has 700 likes on a photo but only 2 comments defiantly paid for their followers and likes. You can pay for comments but its very expensive however if someone really commits and buys those then they will only be spam comments with things like follow for follow or links to websites. Why am I giving this advice away for free when I normally charge for it in my classes? Because I have seen too many models get duped into working with a photographer because he said he has a huge following. And vice versa, I have seen more models do this and use it to rip companies off and get free swag or to build their ego up more. Its disgusting and sadly shows how we value our online status more than just being happy with ourselves. Maybe one day this whole obsession with social media social status will be a thing of the past and we will start hiring people because they are talented not because they know how to move their thumbs on a smart phone.
