For Cardinal fans . . . Joe Strauss wrote a terrific piece about Matt Carpenter in the morning Post Dispatch: " . . . he becomes the Cardinals’ first second baseman named to the All-Star Game since Tom Herr in 1985." And, "Second base typically ranks among the game’s least productive offensive posts. But even relative to the position the Cardinals traditionally endure below-average production. . . " but, "Owing mostly to Carpenter, the Cardinals’ offensive improvement at second base is staggering. The Cardinals lead the National League in second base OPS (.854) and runs (64) and rank second to Cincinnati and their All-Star starter Brandon Phillips in RBIs (48). It’s not just that Carpenter and his seconds lead statistically. They have separated themselves by an immense gulf as second-place San Diego enjoys a .770 figure at the position." Lastly, the article mentions what the Cardinals do with Kolton Wong, "As for the future, second base prospect Kolten Wong is coming. If Carpenter is going elsewhere, it’s to another position, not another team. David Freese remains at third base. Suddenly deficiency has become excess."
