For Jake...17 miles slightly below race pace followed by a frigid outdoor shower at the beach. Distance running is my athletic passion. It requires the mental toughness to settle in for the long haul and accept either my best laid plans or something totally unforeseen. The key is to settle in. Dedicated miles days are impossible for me to settle in. Every time a CFer becomes an angel, I cant settle in, I fire up. By mile 5, I had shaken the sore off. At my mile 9 (its always mile 9, Betty) self check, my body was struggling - overheated, crampy, heavy - but surprisingly my breathing was strong, even, and unlabored. I just couldnt settle, except for my breathing. The tears started to flow. Jake, I never met you my friend, but I know you found me. Through Elizabeth , through Jennifer . Priscilla, I could only think of you at that point...relieved that Jake will forever breathe easy, absolutely furious because 38 is WAY TOO YOUNG. At mile 16, I raised my sword, fueled to fight and kicked it as hard as I could. Finish strong. With a smile. Jake, thank you for fueling my passion to fight - my run today connected us in a way that I hope will make you proud. Rest in peace.
