For Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, I am HONORED to run in - TopicsExpress

For Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, I am HONORED to run in memory of SGT Curtis Michael Fike, USMC March 9th, 1982 – January 03rd, 2012. Curt was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish. He would light up a room with his outgoing personality and magnetic charming bluish green eyes. Everyone loved Curt, his family, friends, his fellow Marines. He joined the Marines shortly after 911 and spent 3 years in OEF / OIF Iraq attached to a communication squadron. He was discharged after his four years of active duty service but was later recalled for a 4th deployment about a year and a half after his initial discharge. Neither he, nor his family expected the 4th deployment, which is unthinkable in terms of combat. His family found out later that Curt endured several incidents during his tours, sustaining a rocket blast during his 2nd tour that resulted in acute hearing loss and rocket attacks during his 3rd tour just inches from where he was sleeping. He came back a changed and irreconcilably broken man. But his salivation came in the job he later took, working at the Dayton National Cemetery, caring for the final resting place of his fallen comrades. His family complied with his final request and had Curt buried there on Jan 9th, 2012. Curt, you will be with me on Sunday. I will run for you, your family, and your memory. We will want to remember and cherish you as a self-sacrificing hero that stood up and went when the call came to defend our country. I am just so sorry that we, as a Nation, failed you when you came home. Semper Fi and Godspeed.
