For a Service Dog, the person must be disabled as defined by ADA - TopicsExpress

For a Service Dog, the person must be disabled as defined by ADA law, then the dog must be trained to do work or perform at least one task (some people say 3 tasks, but the ADA does not specify a number) to mitigate said disability, be house trained, and be under control at all times. For an ESA, the person must have a letter from their treating doctor saying they have a disability and need the dog for said disability, but an ESA does not require any specific training. ESAs do not have rights granting them access to non-pet friendly establishments, only housing and airplanes, so specific training is not required.
