For a few weeks I was concerned that the Gerrymandering and redistricting of Congressional districts was a disaster for the Republic. How can a government be a Democracy when the minority has more power than the majority? For example, the Tea Party represents a very small proportion of the total electorate – less than 10%. But they have gained political power through Gerrymandering out of all proportion the total electorate. It should be that the people select a Congressman to represents them, but with this 19th century political trick, Congressmen SELECT the people to represent. It’s flipped – and that means a Congressman is given representative power based on a select few, not the majority. To be fair – I want to point out that BOTH parties do this. But in the end it DIVIDES the Nation into political ideologies that create a stagnant and broken Government. The act of democratically governing comes to a grinding halt. While it is true ON THE SHORT TERM that these political gimmicks give the minority an advantage I have done a lot of reading and looking at history and now I have become less concerned over the LONG term effect on the Republic. If the popular attitudes of the masses shift ever so slightly, so that even a few people refuse to vote or switch sides, you will see a major and dramatic collapse of that once winning party. Gerrymandering and redrawing Congressional districts is a double-edged sword. You can use it to win in the short term – but if your ideas conflict with the popular ideas of the true majority of the electorate, you will be crushed in future elections far beyond what a normal balanced districting should call for. Gerrymandering is unstable, and not sustainable over the long term when wielded by ANY political party that is too far LEFT or too far RIGHT. It will be fun to see what the 2014 elections bring forth to see if I am right on this – if we still have a viable Republic after the certain economic disaster that looms ahead if our Government defaults on our Nation’s debt this week. It’s going to be a rough ride either way -- hang on! PS: If you still own Government bonds.. you are either a very brave soul, enjoy high risks, or just out of touch with economic reality.
