For a longue durée perspective on IS, and the danger of not - TopicsExpress

For a longue durée perspective on IS, and the danger of not reacting with utmost force at an early stage of its appearance, see what happened about 7-8 centuries years ago with the Mongol conquest. Starting from a very small military force at first (about 20 thousand horsemen), by implementing smart tactics and using extreme terror as a main weapon, they managed to overpower much larger armies and civilizations. When the Mongols would conquer cities, they would regularly murder thousands upon thousands of civilians, instilling deep and paralyzing fear. IS is not doing something new - they are simply implementing terror tactics what were known centuries ago - which were hard to swallow then - and are even harder to comprehend in the modern world - where we conveniently would like to believe, forgetting ancient - and recent history - that all people are in the end decent. In fact, there is a danger that if countries both in the Middle East and the western world dont wake up, what happened to Islamic culture after the Mongol invasion, which to a large extent still has a negative impact on todays Middle East, might occur again. And just as the conquest of Baghdad by the Mongols (in 1258) laid waste to centuries of Islamic culture, it is not impossible to imagine such destruction occurring in important cities in the Middle East – but also in Europe and North America. It could very well be that if world leaders don’t wake up and start acting decisively – we may be on the verge of the end of civilization as we know it… For overviews of what the Mongols did: factsanddetails/asian/cat65/sub423/item2696.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_under_the_Mongol_Empire
