"For about 100 years, we have known that patients with severe mental illness die 15 to 30 years earlier than the general population, and we are finally beginning to see concerted efforts at improving this statistic. Some primary care clinics are now located within outpatient psychiatry clinics. There are continuing efforts to better coordinate care, including interdisciplinary meetings between medical and nonmedical specialties to discuss and improve upon patient care."
