For all of my colleagues who are ready to address the root causes - TopicsExpress

For all of my colleagues who are ready to address the root causes of the kind of racism and police violence that we have seen in Ferguson, Missouri, I highly recommend two resources. Dr. Aaron Thompson, (Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education) does excellent work on systemic racial justice with law enforcement agencies and can be reached at [email protected] Dr. Vern Redekop and the late Shirley Pare have written a groundbreaking book on police/community relationships, and what it takes to restore just relationships after the kind of violence we are seeing in Ferguson, as well as how to proactively do the kind of ongoing training that can prevent such violence in the first place: Vern Redekop and Shirley Pare, Beyond Control: a Mutual Respect Approach to Protest Crowd- Police Relations (Bloomsbury Academic Press, 2010) As Dr. Thompson writes, these issues can be addressed, but they “require long term strategic and continuous input.” Luckily, such work is being done, is being done well, and can be done in more cities throughout the United States. I have worked with both Dr. Thompson and Dr. Redekop and recommend them with great enthusiasm!
