For all of you who liken gafftop filets to the soft, flaky tastiness of catfish, you might want to go fishing in Port Aransas waters this weekend. Bay and surf anglers have been catching a whole bunch of gafftop lately, according to folks who work at waterfront businesses in Port Aransas. Nancy Groening, at Dolphin Dock, said customers going out in headboats have been returning with small mountains of the fish. “I mean, like a couple hundred pounds a day,” she said. Sharon Keehlisen at Woody’s Sports Center agreed. “Big gafftop – that’s almost everything the Island Queen’s been bringing in,” she said. “Big ones, five- and six-pounders.” The Island Queen docks at Woody’s. In other near-shore news, Keehlisen said anglers have been catching speckled trout around wells in Corpus Christi Bay, big sound trout in the surf and redfish and black drum in the flats. Deep Sea Headquarters reported that offshore trips have resulted in catches of Atlantic sharpnose shark, red snapper and ling. Rhoni Spirlock at Horace Caldwell Pier said a pier angler hauled in a six-foot scalloped hammerhead shark this morning (Friday, May 9). Folks visiting the pier also have been hooking a lot of small bonnet head shark, plus hardhead and gafftop, said Spirlock, who works at Keepers, a shop on the pier. “One person took home a whole stringer of gafftop, probably about 10 of them,” she said. Two seven-foot hammerheads were caught at the pier this past weekend. At Fisherman’s Wharf, Wyatt Hickman said short offshore jaunts have gotten into Atlantic sharpnose shark, kingfish and ling. Longer trips offshore have yielded catches of red and vermilion snapper, scamp grouper, kingfish and ling, he said. Black drum are thickening up in the bays, Hickman said. Anglers hitting the north jetty have been coming back with a lot of redfish and Spanish mackerel, he said.
