For all those people who bought into the idea via the line Barbican press statement that there was some angry, threatening mob that consequently forced the shutting down of ExhibitB,theres a good read below. Ive said in COUNTLESS discussions (as have many) that the statement used words that suggested imminent danger yet there were no arrests and the Barbican had the right to continue to show the exhibition if they had of wanted. They did not have the common decency to put in their press statement that they had conceded that perhaps it was an error of judgement on their part-that it was not fitting and not in line with what they suggest they stand for. Instead, we have read on countless reputed broadsheets that an actor or two FELT frightened ..at the sound of ancestral chanting and drumming. The other clever spin is that the PC gone mad brigade have taken to the discussion of freedom of speech on the back of the protesters surprised victory. Censorship did not take place as that would have had to have been dictated by an actual authority. Whilst the Barbican could arguably consider themselves an authority of the arts, their decisions have no societal impact on our lives, aside from the delightful fact that it usually entertains our various senses. And, as said already - there is nothing legislative to stop the exhibition from continuing. There was also the voice of dismay and disappointment by some, suggesting that they expected better from London as the show had been shown in several other cities previous. Cities they failed to site had a wholly less strong Afro Caribbean educated/ empowered presence. Cities that have always looked to London and New York as trailblazers in the business of multiculturalism- probably the most significant reason that I live and love here. In my mind, London has once again educated the rest of the world in this instant. The Barbican could have easily continued but I suspect that no amount of spin would have helped images of elite mainly middle class white visitors traipsing in against a backdrop of police presence with mainly black people on the picket line.
