For anybody interested: there are five Federal trail classes. Capitalized names are mine. Development designations are Federal Class 1: Wilderness Trace, minimally developed Class 2: Wilderness Trail, moderately developed Class 3: Common Trail, developed Class 4: Accessible Trail, highly developed Class 5: Multi-use Trail, fully developed A local example of Class 5 is the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. Class 4 would be the Moonville Rail-Trail or the Strouds Run Trail. Class 3 includes the vast bulk of trails in our area. There are no good examples of Class 2 and Class 1 trails around here (at least not officially-there are a number of renegade trails that would be Class 2, and many deer trails would be Class 2 or Class 1). Class 2 would be actually a minimally developed trail, generally with no bridges, culverts, or guidance signage, but with a visible treadway most of the time, probably with blazing. Class 1 would be generally a trail that only a skilled woodsperson could follow, with no development at all, probably with additional directions for finding it.
