For centuries the system has worked to exorcise the notion that crime is [a] personal affront that must be answered in a personal manner and replace it the notion that an offense against an individual is offense against society. OK, so, how do we punish such offenses? Do we let the offender(s) stretch out the process for months/years? Do we let them whine and complain that society is the offender? Honestly, I dont get it. Theft should be reimbursed. Violence should be what, fixed? At least an apology? How do we punish that by letting the offender go scot free? Property damage should be repaired. Not just ignored, but FIXED, at the expense of the person who did the damage. Not happening now. I dont know how the justice system is going to fix this, but I would think it would start with sense. You do the crime, you do something to repay. If I steal your car, I should replace it. If I hurt your child, I should be punished in a way that will make me not EVER do that again. If I rob you, I should give back the money and make amends for your loss. Sticking you in a cell where you have a big screen TV and whatever other entertainment you require is NOT punishment. As a parent, a householder, a taxpayer, I maintain my right to confront my offender and to exact a price for what that offender has done. Theft? Equal value and then some. Injury? recompense for the injury and a sincere apology. Damage to property? fix it, with the sweat of YOUR brow and the costs paid by you, personally. Does the justice system just not GET it? Does it, as in the elected representatives of the taxpayers, not get to exact punishment for what the person has done?
