For immediate release 24 July 2013 The African National Congress is saddened by the news of the passing on this morning of the Former Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Justice Pius Langa. A soft spoken, kind hearted legal eagle, in his quest for social justice, Justice Langa ably represented many of our comrades during the dark days of apartheid. Apart from this role, Justice Langa himself was a committed, seasoned activist and leader, fighting against the evil system of apartheid under the banner of the National Democratic Lawyers Association which was part of the family of the United Democratic Front. Coming from humble beginnings, Justice Langa distinguished himself in the service of his country and his country men. He will forever be remembered for his contribution upholding and defending our constitutional democracy and his work in the Press Freedom Commission, once again a testament to his unshakeable commitment to safeguarding the freedoms, rights and liberties which are the foundation of the Republic. The African National Congress sends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Justice Langa. We wish them strength during their period of bereavement and beyond. South Africa is poorer of the loss of this distinguished jurist, Justice Pius Langa.
