For immediate release // excuse cross-posting Contact: Omar Henriquez, NDLON, 516-410-6471 Nadia Marin-Molina, NDLON, 516-984-5755 Day Labor Organizations Issue Invite to “Building Power after Sandy: A Day of Training and Action for Day Laborers” Opportunity to Access Safety Certifications and Free Protective Equipment What: Outreach on day labor corners in NY and NJ Where: Hart Park, 69th St & Broadway, Jackson Heights, Queens When: 9am, Wednesday, October 2, 2013 Who: Day Labor organizers, workers and organizations including New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), Centro del Inmigrante, Casa Freehold Day laborer organizations across the New York/ New Jersey region are issuing an invitation to area day laborers to attend a one year commemoration of Hurricane Sandy reconstruction on Sunday November 3rd that will include health and safety trainings, certifications needed by workers such as Scaffolding and OSHA 10 - workforce development. There will also be trainings in other key areas such as mold, union voice, and immigration reform. Participants will be able to receive personal protective equipment and safety boots. During the convening, participants will also be discussing the lessons learned and best practices drawn from the work done by day laborers and their organizations in Sandy’s aftermath. Organizations that will be participating include: New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), Workers Justice Project, Centro del Inmigrante, AFSC, Casa Freehold, Centro de Derechos Laborales, Don Bosco Workers, Hispanic Resource Center, Neighbors Link, New Labor, Obreros Unidos de Yonkers, Unidad Latina en Accion, United Community Center of Westchester, Viento del Espiritu and National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Also in attendance will be representatives from the Consulate of Mexico, elected officials, and other allies.
