For last several days Shahjalal University of Science and - TopicsExpress

For last several days Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has attracted media attention and also sharp discussion among the learned citizenry with an alarming incident that a student stabbed his own teacher. The incident is quite unacceptable and shocking. The concerned student has already been penalized by the university authority: He is permanently expelled from his Alma Mater and his certificates are also cancelled what we have learned from the media. This was an immediate response from the university authority. Even the government has also taken the matter seriously as the Minister of Education instructed all concerned authorities to take tougher action against the culprit. This is not unexpected. Perhaps the minister wants to set an exemplary punishment to prevent the recurrence of this sort of crime. However, what my attention drew in this nasty incident is the facebook status unleashed by the student (it was released one day before he committed such crime). The status reflects that, I guess, he severely suffers from ill-mental health. The doctors may trace out the name and reasons of such state of mind. I humbly agree with the minister that proper punishment has to be ensured to prevent the further occurrence of this crime. But one thing has to be noted: Only punishment is not a solution to the problem. We need to think more deeply. Why did this incident occur? Should we need to focus on our medical infrastructural scopes and opportunities? Or do we need to revisit our so called student cum teacher politics? Now immediately what is needed, I think, the accused student has to be provided with proper psychological and emotional treatment. And the case should not be explained in a mere simplistic way. I can confidently say, almost every university outside BD has their own medical center significantly dealing with mental health and psychological issues. From my experience I can say, before starting our maiden semester we had to attend a psychological class in which we were learned how to overcome stress and reduce mental anxiety resulting especially from academic pressure and loneliness. This is very important. Even fully mentally sound students can be affected with academic stress. These universities organize regular seminars regarding mental issues particularly for students, and again the authorities are quite responsive to any sort of these problems facing any students, staffs or faculties. In BD we have medical centers in universities. But they are not rich and cannot provide with substantial medical care to the people who require it (They seem to be just providers of paracetamol or medication of this kind). Most importantly they terribly lack providing psychological treatment. I think, it is a high time that we have to think of that.
