No doubt NRA Country artist Josh Thompson is somewhere deep in the dark timber right now, chasing wild elk with a mere stick and string. But even if you don’t hunt, archery is a great, relaxing and inherently safe outdoor activity for the whole family. So get outdoors and give it a try! Archery Facts: *18.9 million Americans participated in archery in 2012, making it the country’s fastest-growing sport. Nearly 1/3, or 6 million, of those participants were women, making them the fastest-growing segment. *Archery is among the safest of all sports, experiencing 0.65 injuries per 1,000 participants. Compare it to football’s 23.92 injury rate or golf’s 1.29. *The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) reached more kids than did Boy Scouts of America last year. Many of those purchase hunting gear and licenses later, money that goes toward America’s wildlife conservation efforts. *The Katniss Everdeen effect is real. While hunters and shooters normally are not portrayed by Hollywood in a favorable light, archery sales increased immediately after the book and movie The Hunger Games was released.
