For many modern readers who approach the Rule(of St. Benedict) hoping to find inspiration for their own journey, first contact can be disappointing. There seems to be an unbridgeable gap between that situation that Saint Benedict envisages and the world in which they live; his concerns do not reflect their own. Many of our contemporaries wonder how the Rule of Saint Benedict could have lasted so long when so much of its contents is out of date. So many measures are antiquated and quaint that they may be amusing to read but are scarcely likely to be put into practice.
