For me, Christmas has been so varied at different times of my life, from full on religious and spiritual participation to full on secular gift-giving and receiving frenzy, with many combinations and gradations in between. This year I happily gave and received no gifts for Christmas, preferring instead to spread my giving throughout the year, and year-end reflection is my focus, seeking perspective, meaning, and an abundance of all good (non-material) things. This morning I feel a strong affinity with the seven Unitarian Universalist principles: - The inherent worth and dignity of every person; - Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; - Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; - A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; - The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; - The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; - Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
