For me, the deciding factor is that this teaching didnt make it into our hymnography. Our worship is full of rich theological detail, and it is how theology is delivered to the members of Christs Body. Not everybody is going to read theology books or the Church Fathers, but everyone who participates in worship learns plenty of theology just by listening to the hymns. And this isnt one of the things the Church decided to teach and reteach in song for 2000 years. Its all right to believe it; it might well be beneficial to meditate on, since our self-indulgent age makes it hard even to take sin seriously. But its not in the core of required beliefs, the ones the Church repeats over and over in worship every week. - Frederica Matthews Green
