For my 12th birthday a close family friend ask what I wanted as a gift. Knowing that he deer hunted I ask if hed take me on my first deer hunt. Perfect timing as my birthday is in Nov. He gladly accepted and we made our plans. My brother and I were friends with his two sons and my parents were the best of friends with he and his wife. The two families spent a lot of time together back then. Some of my most cherished memories of growing up are of times spent with this family. We had many adventures in the woods and the big yard around their house some of which resulted in stitches bumps and bruises and even a BB in the foot once. The deer hunt wasnt successful but it stirred something in me that carries on today as I continue to hunt and enjoy the outdoors. He had played some guitar and always encouraged my playing and would stop anything he was doing at the time to listen to me and his oldest son make our attempts at being guitar Slingers. He also enjoyed woodworking and building things and always showed interest in my projects as a kid. He owned the local hardware and was glad to help with anything I needed concerning a bird house or other 4H project. I found out this evening that he and his current wife were murdered in cold blood in their home in our neighboring county. I saw it on the Atlanta news yesterday but they were not giving names. What a senseless act. A tragic loss of a fine caring man that never hurt anyone and who took a 12 year old kid deer hunting over 35 years ago.
