For my Higley friends... I wrote the following email that I intended to send to the five school board members of Higley Unified. My wife tells me that if, for some reason, I ever intent to apply for a position with HUSD, I better not send it. So...Im posting it here, hoping some of you will feel the need to forward it to the appropriate parties...either exactly as written, or adjusted to suit your own opinions. Copy away! And feel free to tell me what you think! Dave As a concerned parent of two students in the Higley Unified School District, Im asking you to do your due diligence regarding the education our students are receiving, rather than bending to popular speculation supported by administrative ignorance. Please watch the short video linked below as a STARTING point. It shows how a well-educated and forward thinking high school student has done a better job analyzing the positives and negatives of Common Core than most school districts throughout the US have. Then continue your education through your own research (third party...not government sponsored) and you WILL see that Common Core is BAD for education and BAD for students. You have the power to set this district on its future course...either the wrong course at the expense of student success through Common Core, or the right course by moving as far away as possible from Common Core. youtube/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PprP5TCZBRI To be honest, I dont expect much effort on your part to work toward student success as you have just disallowed Junior High bands from traveling to Anaheim this year - a decision based on ignorance (in an effort to mollify a few parents who dread the responsibility of saying No to a kid trying to sell them cookie dough or Christmas wrapping paper) rather than on the impact such an awesome educational event would have on student learning and their junior high experience as a whole...but as an optimist and former educator, I have to believe some of you are actually concerned about our kids future! I happen to support the schools during override elections, but there is a reason why yours, and most other districts, have failed in recent years. The less you support teachers and their students through implementation of unreliable educational trends like Common Core...and the more you seek to support administrative efforts at making their jobs easier by tying the teacher evaluation instruments directly to unrelated, one-time standardized test scores (mandated by the state or otherwise)...the more you lose the public support you so desperately need to pass a budget override. Heres to hoping for the best for our children and their educational future!
